HISTORY
This programme was initiated in 1996 following extensive community consultation which identified a pressing need for an indoor sports and recreational facility to cater for everybody in our community.A charity, Assynt Leisure, was established by a committee of volunteers, who set about raising funds and commissioning a feasibility study. In order to pool resources, two other local organisations, the Assynt Christian Community Youth Project, (A.C.C.Y.P.) and Assynt Community Education, (A.C.E.) joined forces with Assynt Leisure to set about building a single centre that would cater for an extensive range of needs.
Architects were commissioned in 2001 to design and manage the building project. Construction began early in 2004 and our new, unique centre was officially opened on 29th July 2005 by HRH The Princess Royal.

Assynt Leisure offers something for everyone in our community and is a lasting testament to the resourcefulness and industry of the people of Assynt.
THE PROJECT
The project has three complementary aspects:a general sports facility and an area designed to meet some specific social and recreational needs of every generation of the people of Assynt, especially our youth who for years had lived without the type of facility that most in this country have been fortunate enough to take for granted for decades. It also provides an extensive range of educational facilities through The Learning Centre.
PRINCIPLE FEATURES INCLUDE:
- A spacious reception hall
- A large and comfortable area for relaxation and socialising
- A 3 Badminton court-sized sports hall
- A well equipped computer suite which offers opportunities for community access to I.T. for both personal and vocational training and which also acts as a study room
- A private counselling room with access to confidential advice services
- A library
- An exercise suite equipped with the most up-to-date fitness equipment as well as personally tailored training provision and advice from a highly qualified NHS physiotherapist
- A kitchen and servery
- Changing facilities
- A permanently staffed reception area and office
- A charity shop
This wonderful facility would not exist were it not for a large and determined group of volunteers whose huge and unstinting efforts and determination, often in the face of formidable financial, bureaucratic and technical obstacles, succeeded in bringing this much-needed and greatly appreciated community asset from conception to completion. As a community we owe them all a debt of gratitude for their work which continues to this day.
